Tinnitus Treatment – Often a Case of Trial and Error
As advanced as modern medicine is, it has yet to come up with a one-size-fits-all tinnitus treatment. Instead, if you are one of the millions of people who suffers from this condition, the best you can do is to manage the symptoms by figuring out what works best for you.
Oftentimes, that means dealing with trial and error!
But what can you do to treat it?
If your tinnitus is being caused by a specific medical condition, it is much easier to get some relief.
For example, if you’ve noticed that your ears started ringing when you started a new medication, talk to your doctor about it.
The noise in your ears could be a side effect of the drug, and getting rid of it could be as simple as finding a different drug to take!
Or, if you have high blood pressure, getting rid of your tinnitus could be as easy as finding a way to lower it.
The same goes for tinnitus that’s being caused by TMJ. If you can get your TMJ under control (like by getting braces or undergoing some other kind of orthodontic procedure), you will be able to keep your tinnitus symptoms at bay.
Some tinnitus treatments are much simpler. In fact, you can do them right from the comfort of your own home!
For example, a few people develop tinnitus because they have too much earwax. The wax gets impacted and causes noise in their ears.
The solution? Cleaning out your ears more frequently (the right way – NOT with a Q-tip!). That way, you can get a good night’s sleep!
But what if your tinnitus is not being caused by something quite so obvious?
There are other lifestyle changes that you can make; they’ll just take a little longer to work.
Giving up smoking is always a great idea, but did you know that cutting back on caffeine, alcohol, and sugar can really help, too?
The same goes for fatty foods that are driving up your cholesterol.
Sure, it will take a little longer to see the results of these tinnitus treatments, but all of them can be well worth it!
In the meantime, you may need to make some other changes – like incorporating noise machines into your daily life. (This is a tinnitus treatment that you don’t know if it will help until you try.)
By drowning out the noise in your ears with a noise machine, you may be able to sleep, concentrate at work, and do anything else you want – without being held back by your tinnitus symptoms.
And, if you are afraid of keeping your partner awake at night, don’t be. There are even pillow speakers so that only you can hear the noise!
In order to get the most out of your noise machine, you can have your doctor do some auditory testing. That way, you will know which frequencies, pitches, and volumes are best for combating your specific tinnitus sounds.
What other tinnitus treatments are worth a try?
Hearing aids can be used to amplify the sounds around you (like conversations and TV shows), so that external noises drown out the sounds in your ears.
That way, you will be able to take part in social gatherings without feeling like your missing anything!
And while it is not a treatment per se, a journal can be a great way to figure out what triggers make your tinnitus symptoms worse. That way, you can avoid certain activities and even certain foods that make your suffering worse!
One trigger that virtually all tinnitus sufferers need to avoid as much as possible is stress.
By mastering them, you can stay calm when things start to get tense.
What about an alternative tinnitus treatment?
They are typically considered “alternative” for a reason.
Increasing your intake of certain vitamins and supplements won’t hurt you in any way, but you should not rely on these treatments all by themselves.
